Melopoetica
Barbara Barros, Iason Ioannou and friends: Melopoetica is a term used by scholars and composers of the 17th and 18th centuries alike, to describe the relationship between rhetoric and music. Melopoetica or musica poetica, from the Greek melos= melody and poetica= poetry, is very closely related with the baroque doctrine of the affections (affektenlehre) and the musical pathos. To move, affect and stir the passions is the main aim of the baroque with the ultimate goal of an edifying experience. Melopoetica is to perform rhetorically under the baroque mandate of affectus movere. |
